So, what is design thinking?
Design thinking is a way of identifying, reframing and creating solutions to problems by focusing on the needs of users. In essence, it is a human-centric approach which puts users at the heart of design.
Why is it called design thinking?
This approach is the process or way of working for designers, to come up with new ideas when they work on a new product, or when they work to improve a product. The phrase “design thinking” denotes combining the power of design with the rigour of problem solving. With the successes of companies using design thinking, it is now increasingly being applied to a broader set of problems or issues within businesses or societies.
What happens in design thinking?
It is done by first defining or reframing the problem, from the user lens. In other words, elevating empathy with the users rather than simply seeing it from the business lens. It is also applied during the process of generating ideas, to ensure that the ideas are filtered from the simple criteria of whether or not it will solve the user’s friction, both implicit friction or explicit friction. Afterwards, it is also applied in the process of validating and testing the solution with the users.
What’s the benefit of design thinking?
It produces solutions that truly address friction with the users. Many tech companies and successful start-ups use this approach and are creating waves in the market place.
