Prayer to Ask for Protection During at-Tahiyyatu Akhir

Matan Hadith

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Messenger S.A.W used to invoke (Allah): “Allahumma ini a`udhu bika min ‘adhabi-l-Qabr, wa min ‘adhabi-nnar, wa min fitnati-l-mahya wa-lmamat, wa min fitnati-l-masih ad-dajjal. (O Allah! I seek refuge with you from the punishment in the grave and from the punishment in the Hell fire and from the afflictions of life and death, and the afflictions of Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal.”
[Sahih al-Bukhari 1377]

Lessons:

  1. We are asked to make du’a to be safe in the world and the Hereafter.
  2. One of the preferred times to make du’a is after the last tashahhud. Such a du’a must be ma’thur (i.e. originate from the Quran and/or Sunnah) and must be recited in Arabic.

Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah S.A.W as saying:

When one of you finishes the last tashahhud, he should seek refuge in Allah from four things: the punishment in Hell, the punishment in the grave, the afflictions of life and death, and the evil of Antichrist. [Sahih (Albani)]

Thus, the following du’a, extracted from the first of the above ahadith, is one that can be made after reading the last tashahhud:

Let’s practice this du’a so we are guarded from afflictions during our lives, from the temptations of the Dajjal, the tribulations during our death, and from the torture in our graves and the Hellfire!
