Knowledge is taken away by death of the knowledgeable one

The Demise of Knowledge

‘Abdullah b. ‘Amr b. al-‘As reported:
I heard Allah’s Messenger (s.a.w.) saying, “Allah does not take away knowledge, by taking it away from (the hearts of) people, but takes it away by the death of the religious learned men till when none of the (religious learned men) remain, people will take as their leaders ignorant persons who, when consulted, will give their verdict without knowledge. So they will go astray and will lead the people astray.”

Narrated in Sahih Al-Bukhari, hadith no. 100
Grade: Sahih (authentic)

Key Take Away

  1. Ulama’ (religious learned men) are the successors to the Messengers of Allah (peace be upon them).
  2. There will come a time when Allah takes away knowledge through the death of ulama’.
  3. The demise of ulama’ will cause men to take the ignorant as leaders, who will be asked for legal Islamic opinions and will consequently give them without knowledge, misguiding others and being themselves misguided.

Let us strive to be a knowledgeable people and ensure our appointed leaders are among the knowledgeable as well. May we neither misguide others nor be misguided ourselves.
