Hidden Cost of Favors

Probably the reason why most companies and even government agencies have the “no gift” policies.

It is in our nature, which might lead to conflict of interest, is our own inherent inclination to return favors. We are deeply social creatures, therefore, when someone lends us a hand in some way or present us with a gift, we tend to feel indebted. Hence, an invisible hold over us to return the favors in the future.

Such feelings can color our view and making us more inclined to try help that person in the future. Hence, the conflict of interest.

So, it’s important to remember that, there’s no such thing as free lunch 🙂
