Illness Elevates Stature and Extinguishes Sin

‘A’isha reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: A believer does not receive (the trouble) of running a thorn or more than that but Allah elevates him in rank or effaces his sins because of that.

1. Islam calls upon the ummah to be patient towards every trial that is endured.

2. The purpose of trials sent by Allah, which comes in many forms, such as pain and sickness, are to elevate the stature of that person by His side.

3. Another purpose Allah sends tribulation or tests in the forms of pain and sickness is to extinguish the sins of His slaves.

4. The sins of those facing tribulations, like illness, will fall as leaves from trees; the exception to this is major sins (e.g. sins of Shirk).

No Muslim is afflicted with any harm, even if it were the prick of a thorn, but that Allah expiates his sins because of that, as a tree sheds its leaves.

May we be patient with all the trials and tribulations that befall us.
